In 2025, the Journées de Ravel festival celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maurice Ravel, who lived for many years in the nearby town of Montfort l’Amaury. As part of the festival, we were glad to host a piano concert by Mario Calvo Martínez, who performed Modest Mussorgsky’s Paintings at an Exhibition in their original version for solo piano. The concert was followed by a discussion with Màrius Bernadó, Lecturer in Music History at the University of Lleida, who introduced the audience to the fascinating figure of pianist Ricardo Viñes, to whom we owe the first French performance of Mussorgsky’s pieces.
