Exhibition of photographs

Two artists, two photographers, from two vastly different generations with 55 and 20 years of constant work respectively, are brought together in a house unlike any other. United, but not confined under the same roof: artists cannot be confined, least of all Arno Rafael Minkkinen or Gaspard Noël, two spirits enamored with freedom, the great outdoors, and nature, of which they have been apostles. Noël in homage to Minkkinen; Minkkinen honoring and admiring Noël’s continuum in self-portraiture now in color, a rare two-person exhibition in one, both artists tethered to risk taking, surprise, and hopeful epiphany.
In Being There each artist is dedicated to the integrity of what was actually visible to the camera lens at the very moment of exposure from the position of the tripod upon which the camera was mounted. “Being There” in this exhibition means being there. No form of manipulation has been used to create these works. By observing these self-portraits, the viewer becomes the photographer behind the lens.
The exhibition gathers 34 photographs by the Finnish American and the French artists. Dating from the 1970s to the present day, some works are shown in public for the first time. The works are displayed throughout the house and the garden of Aalto, another artist for whom “form must have content, and that content must be connected to nature”.
